The exhibit catalogue entry on Modigliani (p.4):

...when in the end he realised that this single theme would lead to repetition, he preferred a violent death to an artistic decline.
Lonely contemplators of the world of modern men and woman, these poets of tragedy scrutinise the symptoms of a rapidly changing world and transform them into pictorial shytms of colour and line. To the latter category belonged Modigliani. Descended from a distinguished but impoverished family, ill and starving, he saw his own tragedy repeated in his environment, the world of parisian writers and painters, and enclosed their sensitive, lonely personalities in curves of classical ease...
