Legal note on MR: This investigation has not had access to MR’s catalogue raisonné; all research here is based on open sources, publications and exhibitions. By no means has that catalogue been copied at any point. Modigliani Project and Modigliani Initiative are marked YES when the work is published or otherwise recorded by those projects, even if no catalogue number is assigned; otherwise the field is marked ?.
Provenance
- Paul Guillaume, Paris? (an image is recorded in the Guillaume files; this investigation notes the ownership is not settled).
- Bignou Gallery, Paris (acquired 1927?; sold 18 April 1928). Bignou informed Chester Dale that the painting had been bought from an artist in Montparnasse, a friend of Modigliani, probably Foujita.
- Chester Dale Collection, New York, acquired 18 April 1928–1963.
- National Gallery of Art, Washington, inv. 1963.10.171, Dale bequest 1963.
This investigation records the conflict between a Guillaume-file photograph and Bignou’s statement to Dale. Both published accounts are given; the sequence is otherwise that of the museum.

Book-length publications are marked with a footnote giving a full citation. Notes
D’Atri papers no. 24, oil on canvas, 58 × 38 cm later corrected to 54.5 × 38 cm, dated 1917, with an incorrect provenance note of a Netter sale in 1931.
Infrared and X-radiograph images published in this investigation show the drawn contour and brushwork.
The National Gallery of Art titles the canvas Adrienne (Woman with Bangs), 1917, oil on linen, 55.3 × 38.1 cm, inv. 1963.10.171, Chester Dale Collection. The museum’s published provenance is: possibly Paul Guillaume; purchased 1927 by Étienne Bignou; sold 18 April 1928 to Chester Dale; bequest 1963. Catalogue dates of 1915 are retained above as the other published reading.
This investigation marked several fields as still being checked. The facts above are those already published; where sources disagree, both readings are given.
