This investigation records holes at the corners of the support. One hole is recorded as covered by restoration.

This investigation records a very thin or absent ground, with raw linen visible in places and a thin white primer in others, and black borders indicating that the canvas was painted before it was nailed to the present stretcher.

A comparison with the Barnes boy in a sailor suit (1917-w-61) is published in this investigation: similar background, without the furniture and horizontal line of the Barnes picture.

This investigation records a drawn ear painted over the colour.
