Notes

The 1997 Christie’s condition report recorded varnish and scattered small retouches along the edges and in the impasto; the catalogue illustration was described as too red.

According to information recorded in this investigation, MR informed the 1997 auction that the work would not be included in the catalogue raisonné then in preparation, on the ground that even if original it had been heavily restored. The 2019 sale catalogue does not mention that earlier opinion.
