ARTHUR PFANNSTIEL

Arthur Pfannstiel (1901–c. 1984) was a German-born figure who arrived in Paris in the 1920s, initially interested in painting before working as a translator. He married a French woman and established himself in the French art world. During the Occupation he became an active collaborator with the Nazi apparatus. He served on the staff of the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (ERR) in Bordeaux and the GIS, acted as an informer for Kurt von Behr, maintained contacts with Adolf Wüster, and later worked as an agent for the Sicherheitsdienst. Contemporary reports and postwar investigations describe him as having supplied names of Jewish collectors and participating in the confiscation of Jewish-owned collections. He was arrested after the Liberation, held at Fresnes prison, and convicted of espionage and looting; he received a prison sentence (with suspension in one account) before returning to the art trade.
His published work on Modigliani consists of two principal catalogues. The 1929 Modigliani (Seheur), supported by Léopold Zborowski and Jonas Netter and drawing on their files, offered a “catalogue présumé” of roughly 290 paintings with only about 90 illustrations. The 1956 Modigliani et son œuvre (Bibliothèque des Arts) expanded this to 362 paintings but reproduced only 43 of them. He also published a volume on drawings (1958) and later contributed to a study of the sculpture (with Bernard Schuster).

Additional publications from the 1930s include translations of Hitler (Principes d’action) and Ludendorff, as well as his own Das verratene Frankreich.

Both catalogues are riddled with errors: incorrect dates, dimensions, supports, and locations; incomplete or omitted provenances; and numerous works that later scholarship has treated as doubtful or untraceable. The scarcity of illustrations made verification difficult even at the time.

Many entries appear to recycle earlier sources without independent checking.

After the war Pfannstiel continued to issue private certificates and opinions.

Works that rely solely on his authentication have not been accepted by major auction houses; his name is useful to them only when paired with a Ceroni listing. His files eventually passed to others (including a son who later collaborated with Parisot-related projects).

In the postwar market Pfannstiel functioned as both cataloguer and dealer.

Several works that passed through his hands or carried his certificates have since been questioned or identified as problematic.

His dual role—authenticating while trading, and doing so after documented participation in the looting of Jewish collections—placed him among the more compromised figures in the early Modigliani trade.

Contemporary and later observers (including R) have characterized him as unreliable and as a “really bad guy.”

His catalogues remain historically interesting as early attempts to inventory the work, but they are not treated as a trustworthy reference for attribution or provenance.

The combination of factual unreliability, market activity, and documented Nazi collaboration makes Pfannstiel a distinctly dark presence in the history of Modigliani scholarship and dealing.
